We climb in bed, and she asks me to read her a love story. I do so while she rested her head on my chest.
When I finish, she looks up at me and says “It’s a shame.”
I ask her, “What is?”
“Love stories. They’re written by people who are heart broken. Inspired by their experience with a love they’ve lost. They do this so they don’t need to think ‘what if’ because in their stories, the author goes on living that ‘what if’ kinda life with the person they lost.”
I tell her, “Let’s not be one of those authors.” She smiles and kisses me on the cheek.
Turns out she became one of those authors, and I became her ‘what if’
